His Holiness Metropolitan Bishop Tikhon (1879 - 1968)

The ninth Metropolitan Bishop of the White Well (Tit Deevich Kachealkin) was born in October 1879. Former Bishop of Manchuria (from 1941) and for a while Bishop of Tulcea, His Holiness Tikhon became Metropolitan Bishop on 30th March 1943.

            During his rule, when Romania passed over from the Julian calendar (Old Rite) to the Gregorian one (The New Rite), The Old Church Orthodox Church underwent harsh reprisals from the Government at that time, led by General Antonescu.

Upon his refusal to perform church services “according to the new law”, His Holiness was arrested and sent to a concentration camp in Targu Jiu (Romania), where he was to be confined until the entry of the Russian Army in Romania.

            He died on 4th March 1968 a was buried in the parish churchyard of “The Protection of the Mother of God” – Braila.
