His Holiness Metropolitan Bishop Leonty (b. 1966)

The present Old Rite, White Well, Metropolitan Bishop, Leonty (Izot Lavrente), was born on 26th August 1966 in the village Slava Rusa, Tulcea county. On 11th March 1996 he was ordained, by the Holy Synod, as Bishop of Braila. Until that date, he had been archdeacon, monk priest at the monk monastery Uspenia – Slava Rusa. On 27th November 1996, he became the Old Rite Orthodox Metropolitan Bishop of White Well, being ordained by Bishop Leonyd of Slava and together with Bishop Afanasy of Moldavia, at present Archbishop Sofrony of America, Australlia and Canada, and with Metropolitan Bishop Alimpy of Moscow and of the Whole Russia.

His Holiness Leonty, Archbishop Sofrony and other members of the Old Rite Church brought, on 3rd June 2000 the earthly remains of Metropolitan Bishop Ambrosy, from Trieste, Italy at the Metropolitan Cathedral “The Protection of the Mother of God” – Braila. The remains are still there, to this day.

In April, 2002, the first historical meeting took place between His Holiness Leonty and the Patriarch of the Romanian Church, His Great Holiness Teoctist.

During his time, in August 2002, The Ministry of Culture and Cults from Romania, approved the new ordinance of The Old Rite Orthodox Church, thus, changing its name from that of a “cult”, to that of “The Old Rite Orthodox Church from Romania”.

Starting with the new school year 2003 – 2004, in Iassy (Romania) a new theological school was founded, with the High Approvals of   His Holiness Leonty and of the Holy Synod.
